Travel on a Budget

7 ways you can see the world on a budget

So long maties, I'm off to sail the High Seas!

You don't need to be rich to travel the world, there's amazing opportunities available allowing you to enjoy that once in a life time adventure whilst sticking to a budget!
Whether it's becoming an Adventure Leader, working on a farm or teaching English. Make it your resolution for the new year to go out and see the world!

1. Couchsurfing

Couchsurfing is an awesome site that connects travelers with each other. You can use the site to find a place to stay or share your own couch with a fellow globetrotter. If you want to travel around and have a free place to sleep, this is an excellent option! It offers reviews from people who have stayed at others people's pads so you can see what kind of people/places there are before visiting. I couchsurfed during my time in Buenos Aires and it was brilliant, we met some great friends and all at no cost! We've returned the favor a few times by hosting our own travelers :).

2. Become an Adventure Leader

Do you want to experience a truly epic adventure whilst also joining an amazing cause? Become an Adventure Leader and guide a team of ambitious and adventurous students in their fundraising and training efforts. These are truly amazing volunteering opportunities which allows you to develop essential skills for your future, not to mention undertake iconic trips and challenges. A number of companies are out there so do some research on which ones offer what!

3. Work on a farm

If you're fine with low-key travel opt for working on a farm; you could be picking raspberries in New Zealand or making wine in the South of France. You’ll meet a range of people from all over the world, mainly travellers who like you are gathering some cash together for more travelling. A good organisation to check out is WWOOF where you'll find organic farms that provide their volunteers with free food and accommodation in exchange for their help around the farm. Get those wellies on! Some hostels worldwide also offer a work for sleep deal where you work to stay at the hostels for no cost.

4. Be a tour guide

Do you like interacting with people? This could be the summer job for you! Being a tour guide or tour leader means you'll get to experience things you wouldn't otherwise. Some tour companies specialise in adventure travel, budget travel, or sight-seeing - so make sure you find one that relates to your interests. No use in guiding a group down a mountain if you're scared of heights!

5. Work on a cruise ship

Working on a cruise ship is HARD, you don't get to lounge on the decks all day but it’s a great opportunity to travel and earn money. Most cruise lines have job openings up on their website so get Googling!
Whether you get to have time off when the ship docks depends on your job role, for example if you're in the cleaning department, this'll be when you're most likely expected to get down to business. If you’re working in another department like entertainment, you'll get to go off and explore. Some hotels employ temporary staff over the busier seasons as well as clubs and pubs. There are plenty to look at if you google them.

6. Teach

If you're reading this you probably have a pretty firm grasp of the English language which means you're in luck! One of the best ways to make money and travel at the same time is to teach English overseas. Get yourself a TEFL degree and off you go! As this job is in such high demand, some companies (especially in Asia) will even pay for your flight. But beware TEFL's and TESOL's cost for certification but once you have one you're set to go.

7. Don't splurge on food

Once you've embarked on your adventure keep an eye on your budget. Don't waste your cash on luxuries. Local markets are your friends; you can get lots of fresh fruit and veg and sandwiches on the cheap. Also choose the supermarket over a restaurant any day. Fresh bread, a few slices of meat or cheese and a piece of fruit makes for a tasty & satisfactory meal and will only set you back a few pounds/rial/baht. Some hostels that offer work for a bed schemes also give their employees food so stock up for the day and you won't have to worry about meal expenses. Failing that there's always the 99p super saver menu at the local McDonalds.

Around the world in 80 Jobs is a great place to look for work abroad not to mention countless others. Whatever you decide, make this year the one you decide to tick a few destinations off that bucket list and enjoy the adventure!
